WINTER'S MOSS-COVERED FOREST FLOORS

We have made two Advent wreaths that both create images of wintry landscapes, but with two different aesthetic expressions.

One advent wreath is harmonious and romantic in its form, and brings to mind a lush forest floor with snowdrops peeking cautiously out of the moss. The wreath is not traditionally Christmas with red and white colors, but gives the feeling of a gentle winter landscape with the snowdrops and the green moss, which means that you can easily keep it standing longer and enjoy it throughout the winter months.

FOR THIS WREATH WE USED OUR ROSE OIL CANDLES.

The second wreath is held in shades of blue and purple to bring to mind an enchanting ice landscape. With the dark blue flowers andglass candles , they enliven the Advent wreath and give it a modern and colorful twist. The rest of the wreath is relatively minimalist without too many extra decorations, so the blue elements remain the focal element, but without it being too showy or overpowering. The whitish and bluish moss gives the impression of a frost-covered forest floor, creating longings for a white Christmas.

Here's what you'll need to make the wreaths:

  • Straw wreath
  • Mash of your choice
  • Paper flowers - here we have used snowdrops, daisies, peonies and poppies
  • Dried twigs and flowers
  • Glass candles - here we have used glass candles in the colors rose and blue
  • Scissors
  • Steel wire

CHOOSE YOUR OWN FAVORITE FLOWER MADE OF PAPER.

DURABLE STRAW WREATH AND SOFT MOSS

Both advent wreaths are tied on a straw wreath, which makes the advent wreaths durable, solid and easy to move around. We have covered one straw wreath with moss in two shades of green, and the other with whitish moss with bluish tones. With both wreaths, we have spun thin steel wire around the moss to attach it to the wreaths. Avoid tightening the string too much, so that the wreath becomes too tight and tight to look at. This also makes it harder to put things into the moss. Instead, attach the moss with a gentle hand, but so that it is still attached, to create a softer and lighter look, and so that the moss looks more natural with the small pieces of moss "popping out" here and there.

Moss comes in different types and colors, so you can choose the type you prefer. You can pick moss in the wild or buy preserved moss, such as Icelandic moss. Preserved moss is natural moss but preserved so that it remains soft and easy to work with.

The type and color of moss you use has an impact on the expression of your advent wreath. For example, we have used preserved moss in darker colors for one wreath, so that it contrasts nicely with the white snowdrops, and whitish moss for the other wreath, so that it has a clean expression and so that the dark blue color comes into focus.

DISCREET CANDLEHOLDERS

When the base for the wreath is laid, you can insert your candlesticks into the wreath. By putting them in first, it is easier to see and determine where they should sit. Place them carefully so that they are straight and with the same spaces between them.

We have chosen minimalistic gold candlesticks so that they match the colors of the wreaths, but which are still discreet and do not take too much focus from the decoration itself.

ETERNAL PAPER FLOWERS

One wreath is decorated with our handmade paper flowers in the shape of snowdrops and our dark red "Daisy", which is also called daisies. The paper snowdrops are beautiful and neat, and you often associate the flower with life and hope when you see them peeking out of the white snow. We have placed the snowdrops at regular intervals around the entire wreath, some of which are placed in small clusters to create variety. This makes the wreath feminine, natural and beautiful from all sides. In addition, we have placed five of our dark red daisies in paper to break up the white and to create an eye-catcher. With the red color, we also bring more Christmas atmosphere into the wreath, without it taking the focus away from the delicate snowdrops and becoming too overwhelming. You can of course also use other paper flowers for this, but if you want to keep the same look, you can use paper flowers in the same size and color as the daisies. Again, make sure to place the paper flowers at regular intervals so that the wreath becomes dynamic and balanced in its expression.

The snowdrops are stuck into the moss and carefully wrapped in the wire under the base of the wreath, while the daisies, which have longer stems, can be wrapped around the wreath. The stem is easily covered by the soft and airy moss. You can also wrap a little more steel wire around so that the paper flowers are extra attached.

For the second Advent wreath, we have used our "Peony" paper flower in blue , and our light purple "Poppy" paper flower . The light purple flower is perfect for emphasizing the cool ice colors in the wreath. Both paper flowers have long stems and therefore they are wrapped around the wreath and secured with a little extra wire. The stems are also covered by the airy moss in the wreath. We have distributed three blue peonies in the wreath at regular intervals and filled the "holes" with seven of our light purple "Poppy" paper flowers, so that the wreath is beautiful and the same from all sides.

DRIED FLOWERS AND TWIGS

When the paper flowers are positioned as desired, you can add dried twigs and flowers to make the wreath extra festive. For one wreath, we have used different white twigs, which create airiness and height, as well as yellow dried flowers, so that the snowdrop's yellow color in the middle is repeated. The white twigs are reminiscent of snowy berry and fir branches, which only enhances the Christmas feeling.

We added small dried hydrangea flowers in a pale blue color and small clusters of white dried berries to the second wreath. The dried elements are discreet, but at the same time perfect for creating a cozy and wintry atmosphere and underpinning the idea of the wintry ice landscape.

BEAUTIFUL AND PRACTICAL GLASS LIGHTS

Finally, you can select your candles for the Advent wreath. We have used our rose colored glass candles, which complement the dark red paper flowers beautifully for one wreath, and dark blue glass candles for the other. The glass candles are filled with lamp oil and never burn down, like ordinary candles. Therefore, they can burn throughout Christmas, and beyond. You also avoid candles dripping into your beautiful decoration or the candles burning down and setting the dried parts on fire.

AN ETERNITY WREATH

The paper flowers , the preserved moss and dried twigs, as well as the glass candles actually mean that your wreath can last forever. You can therefore enjoy it throughout the long winter months and save it Christmas after Christmas. In this way, your homemade Advent wreath can become a tradition and permanent Christmas decoration in your home. The simple and elegant expression of the Advent wreaths makes them aesthetic and timeless, but of course you can always replace the paper flowers with other types of paper flowers, or add more to create other expressions. The wreaths are therefore a more sustainable alternative to an Advent wreath with fresh flowers and fir (which dries out after a month), as it is durable, reusable and can easily be changed and adapted in its appearance.
