Simple and sweet or dramatic and opulent? A flower wreath for the hair can be made oversized with lots of volume and with the garden's biggest stars such as peonies and peasant roses in the main role, but can also easily be kept simpler in expression. Regardless of your style, a flower wreath in your hair gives you a beautiful and natural look that goes well with weddings, confirmations or one of the summer's many parties.
And although the flower wreath looks impressive and of course takes some time to make, it is not that difficult at all. And who doesn't want to play with flowers, colors and the green wonders of the garden?
Here you will get some tips to get started with making your own flower wreath for your hair. We have chosen to use flowers from our new collection of paper flowers as an eye-catcher in the flower wreath. As a base we use eucalyptus branches, hydrangea and a little sprinkling of free imagination.
MATERIALS
Before we get started with the wreath, let's get the materials under control. First of all, you must decide which base you want to use for the wreath. Maybe you have an old hair clip lying around that you want to give new life to or maybe you want to make it from scratch on a base of steel wire and floral ribbon - the advantage of this type of base is that you can adapt the wreath to fit to your head.
For this flower wreath you will need:
- Steel wire or flower wire
- Floral tape (it's green and looks like paper tape)
- Metal wire to fasten the flowers with
- Flowers/greenery: Hydrangea, bridal veil & eucalyptus
- The paper flowers nude peony and bordeaux daisy
WHICH FLOWERS CAN BE USED FOR A FLOWER WREATH FOR THE HAIR?
If you want to make a flower wreath for your hair, it is first of all worth considering whether you want to make a wreath with fresh flowers, which have a limited lifespan, or whether you want to make an eternal wreath with dried flowers and paper flowers. If it is for a special occasion such as a wedding, it can be great to have a wreath with a long shelf life, which after the party can decorate the decor and bring back memories of the day.
We have chosen to make the flower wreath in a mix of paper flowers and real flowers, which are allowed to dry. Bridal veils and hydrangea are particularly suitable here.
When choosing flowers, think about both the fullness and size of the flowers. It is a good idea to choose some smaller flowers that can fill the space between your flowers. The smaller flowers can be supplemented with some greenery and thus form the base for the wreath.
In general, flowers that do not contain too much water are good for wreaths. In addition, it is a good idea to go for flowers with thin stems that bend easily.
FLOWERS USED IN THIS WREATH
Hydrangea:Â Leave your Hydrangea stems in a vase of water until they are dry. So they can keep both shape and color for a longer time. If you use fresh hydrangeas, they will wither in the same way as other flowers.
Bridal veil:Â Bridal veils give a light and airy look and are good for filling small spaces between your flowers. Bridal veils can also advantageously be dried in advance, but can also last some time in the wreath before they start to get brownish leaves.
Lavender:Â With its thin stems, lavender is super easy to work with, and since the flower does not contain much water, it also dries up nicely in the wreath. If necessary, use it to fill small holes in the wreath.
Nude peony paper flower:Â The peony is one of the most beautiful in the garden and this paper version, with its many leaves and beautiful nude color, works perfectly as an eye-catcher in the flower wreath. You therefore also don't have to be afraid that the main role of the wreath will wither during the party. Buy the flower here .
Bordeaux daisy paper flower:Â The burgundy daisy provides a beautiful contrast to the pink colors of the flowers and the dusty green of the eucalyptus branches. Buy the flower here .
Eucalyptus:Â Eucalyptus branches are easy to twist around your wreath and act as a good base, which also makes it easier to keep the flowers in place.
GUIDE: HOW TO MAKE A FLOWER WREATH FOR THE HAIR
There are many different techniques for making the base of the flower wreath. We have chosen a simple model with steel wire shaped after the head, where we have just twisted the ends together to form a circle. The closed wreath sits really well on the head, and you therefore don't have to be afraid of it slipping off.
The flowers can be placed all around a la the beautiful Swedish midsummer wreath, you can make a small mini-bouquet that sits on the side or front of the wreath or you can do as here, where we have made a slightly larger collection of flowers on the side of the wreath. It all depends on how ostentatious you want the hair ornament to be.
STEP 1: MAKE THE BASE OF THE WREATH
- Measure a piece of steel wire the same circumference as your head + a little extra so you can just twist the ends together into a circle shape
- Dress the collection with floral ribbon. If the flower ribbon is difficult to stick, rub it between your fingers a little so that it starts to stick.
STEP 2: DECORATE WITH FLOWERS
- Cut your flowers into approximately 4-5 cm lengths
- Twist the long eucalyptus stems around the entire wreath
- Put on your first paper flower - you easily string it around your base
- Then fill with a mix of paper flowers and fresh or dried flowers. It is entirely up to you how full your wreath should be
STEP 3: TRY THE WREATH ON
- Now you are already ready to try the wreath on. Here you can see if there are small "holes" in the wreath, where you just need to add a little extra fullness
Then you are ready for one of the summer parties. Use the wreath with loose hair, with braids or a loose updo.
