The winter season can feel long and dark, but one way to make it less dark is to bring onion plants inside. For a long time, it has been a tradition to bring hyacinth bulbs indoors and drive the flowers forward and enjoy the scent when it springs out.

USE YOUR GLASS VASES WITH FLOWER ONIONS

If you want to bring the beautiful flower bulbs inside, the favorite is the classic hyacinth bulb, which will bloom quickly at room temperature. However, there are many different flower bulbs, so feel free to try different varieties. Here is our mini guide for using our vases with spring onions.

HOW TO DO IT

1. Take the onion out of the ground and free the roots from the worst soil.
2. Rinse the roots in water so that the soil remains.
3. Put the onion in a vase so that only the roots are covered with water.
4. The onion itself must not be left in water as it rots.
5. Change water occasionally

If you want to speed up the flower process, you can make a paper shop and put it over the green. The lifespan in water depends both on the temperature inside and how far into the flowering the bulb is, but if you buy it with buds, they can easily last up to 7 days in the living room.

Common to them all is that after flowering you can dig the flower bulbs down outside and hope they come up next spring.

CARING FOR FLOWER BULBS - INDOOR

Place the pot cool, a warm placement will shorten the life of the onion.

Water when the soil dries out but be aware that the onion must not be overwatered as the onions will then rot. It is hard to say how often an onion should be watered as it depends on the temperature inside.

Do not fertilize your flower bulbs as they have plenty of nutrients in the bulb itself.

MOVE YOUR FLOWER ONION IN THE GARDEN

Common to all bulbous plants is that they thrive best outside, in the cold. However, they bloom so beautifully inside as well that it is worth every second that they are placed inside. Once the bulb has flowered, it can be put out on the balcony in a pot or in the garden, where it will germinate again next spring.

Please note, that when choosing to expose the bulb to soil it shortens the life of the plant.

FIND YOUR FAVORITE ONION PLANT

Here is an overview of which bulbous plants we enjoy inside:

Tulips, Tulipa: Depending on the species, they bloom outdoors from March to May, but already in late December and early January, you can buy budding bulbs at the florists and enjoy the view either inside or in a jar outdoors. Tulip bulbs indoors can be enjoyed with and without soil. Also put your tulip bulb in a vase where the water covers the roots and admire the beautiful shape of the bulb.

Hyacinth, Hyacinthus orientalis: The majestic and strongly fragrant onion plant, can be purchased in all supermarkets from mid-October to March in several colors. The hyacinth bulb is large and if you buy it with a flower bud, you will already be able to enjoy the sight of the beautiful flower and scent after only a few days inside. Hyacinths indoors can be enjoyed with and without soil.

Pearl hyacinths, Muscari: Small, blue and with pearls like on a string. Pearl hyacinths can usually be bought in supermarkets from January to early March. Thrives best in soil.

Erantis, Eranthis hyemalis: Our beloved Danish spring herald which you see everywhere in the Danish gardens starting spring. Erantis thrives best outside in the cold air, but you can easily dig up a little and enjoy inside if you do not have a garden yourself. Erantis can be purchased from January to February. Thrives best in soil.

Crocus, Crocus: Depending on the species, they bloom from February to April. Crocus can be bought in supermarkets from January to February. The onion plant looks like a small tuft of grass and you can place it in a small pot where you can follow the development.

Vibe eggs, fritillaria: This bulbous plant has flowers like vibe eggs. They do not last long, but they are worth a try anyway. Vibe eggs can be bought in stores from January to early March. Vibe eggs stay best in soil, but you can also expose the onion and leave the roots in water.

Daffodil, Narcissus: The ultimate spring flower that is the hallmark of Easter. Daffodils are available in an incredible number of varieties and are easy to keep. They can be purchased from January to the end of April.
